On Standards 悟

Often we say that we are good, yet wish for things to happen or hope things could’ve been different. We search for meaning in our feelings and can’t recognize the fact that our circumstances control them.

All our experiences are momentary and we carry them in our minds only to not have space for our thoughts.

We define ourselves through money, status and worth, where the thresholds lie in expectations of others.

The standards of man are everchanging. The standards of nature are defined by their ability to endure. There are no limits to exhibiting honour, honesty and patience. These are exemplary by their very nature to endure. Nothing which isn’t tested is unreliable. Take any path, but know that you’ll encounter ill fate or wretched people along your way.

So, don’t wish for good things to happen. Instead, increase your capacity to endure vice and desire to be in a state of acceptance by exercising your nobility.

Only that which is under our control is desirable. The ability to do good is within our control. The strength to endure vice is within our control.

That which is “Good” can be divided into four parts: wisdom, justice, courage, and moderation. “Wisdom” is good sense, good calculation, quick-wittedness, discretion, and resourcefulness. Show “Justice” through piety(devotion to duty), honesty, equity, and fair dealing. Exercise “Courage” Through endurance, confidence, high-mindedness, cheerfulness, and industriousness. Seek moderation with good discipline, seemliness, modesty, and self-control.
